Andy Timmons – That Was Then, This Is Now [2002]

For a while now, Andy Timmons has been Rock Guitar’s best kept-secret. First, hidden under the glam mask of Danger Danger and then (like many other virtuosos) stuck having to release his albums independently and overseas. But through it all, he did very well, selling thousands of records and developing a cult following, serving as Olivia Newton John’s music director, as well as providing guest performances on albums by the likes of Kip Winger and Joe Lynn Turner. Timmons also played on the much heralded G3 Tour which culminated with him jammin’ on-stage with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, and consequently Vai signing him to his “Favored Nations” label. With the release of That Was Then, This Is Now – The Best of X-tacy, the secret will finally be revealed! It was about F’n time Andy Timmons got a U.S. record deal.
Have you heard of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, and Eric Johnson? Well I like Timmons better. Let me explain: Timmons has the chops to match any guitar god, but his music is soulful and emotional. His style blends rippin’ shred licks with the emotional delivery of a George Harrison or a Jeff Beck. It is there that his strength lies as a guitarist and furthermore as a composer. As I’ve said before, Timmons’ songs tell stories that one as a listener can connect with at a higher level.
That Was Then, This Is Now – The Best of X-tacy combines the “best” of Timmons’ previous instrumental releases Ear X-tacy and Ear X-tacy2 with 5 new rippin’ tracks as well as a bonus track which Andy wrote about Beatle George Harrison. Every song on this record is truly excellent – a definite must-have for any music collection. I would mention highlights, but the whole album rips, so I recommend every single track.
Slowly but surely, Andy Timmons is becoming my favorite guitar player. I encourage everyone reading this to RUN to the nearest record store and pick up this gem. It’s time for ALL OF US to jump on the Andy Timmons Shred Bandwagon.
